As an artist, you can never stop learning.

Part of EPIC's mission is to arm our company members with the tools to prepare them for a successful career in the arts, including skill based and professional development classes.

All classes are FREE for EPIC company members as a part of their training

.

Non-EPIC Company members are welcome to take classes for a $15 suggested donation, per class.

EPIC Plays:

The Inclusion Project

Taught by:

It is important for every theatre company to have a home base community - and that is what EPIC Plays is for us. In EPIC Plays, actors get to be silly, be themselves, have fun through arts skills and simultaneously explore and devise original content while building a strong community. In the fall, we focus on devising - or creating our own content - around the theme of Independence, love, loss and the inclusion experience. We will perform together in December to showcase our original work. In the spring, our class will focus on  building ensemble, learning different skill sets, improvisation, magic and music and preparing for our summer showcase.

EPIC Skills:

Vocal Technique & Music Foundations

Taught by:

Ian Foster Jones

In this class you will learn the building blocks to create a solid vocal foundation that can translate to the stage and to your auditions. Students will learn music theory, harmony, chords, melodies, rhythms, scales and tempo. This class will be offered in the fall as an intro course and resume again in the spring with culminating choral performances at EPIC's yearly fundraiser at HBO, Songs from the Spectrum. Students who complete both semester will leave with a "book" of auditions songs personalized to their skill level and personalities, and the opportunity to apply to audition at two regional summer-stock calls.

EPIC Skills:

Film Production

Taught by:

Shelly Molad and Courtney Renee Stallings

This is a full year course in which students will work together to devise and create their our short film. The class will learn concepts of acting on-camera, creating a script, filming behind the camera and editing a final product. Teachers will learn students' individual strengths to bring out natural talent on and off the camera. The class will submit their final product to the Sprout Film Festival in the spring.

EPIC Skills:

Intro to Puppetry

Taught by:

Mindy Pfeffer and Cecilia Arana 

This class is a basic ntroduction to the art of puppetry, specific to puppetry performance techniques and simple puppet making. You will learn the basics of bringing objects to life, including ‘life and breath’ and ‘focus’ techniques and physicality exercises. You will be introduced to a variety of different puppet styles and techniques. Most of the sessions will be practical and involve hands on performing or making exercises and participants will be encouraged to share their work with each other.

EPIC Skills:

Playwriting

Taught by:

Guest Playwrights

This class is for those students interested in playwriting specifically and who may have already written full plays or are struggling in the beginning stages of the writing process. Led by an experienced playwright, students will meet every other week to learn how to give and receive constructive feedback, create characters and mapping, develop high and low context dialogue, revealing action, the power of the unspoken word, storytelling from personal experience, and effective monologuing. This class will culminate in a euro-inclusive play experience, with productions, scenes and readings produced by EPIC.

EPIC Skills:

Personal Narrative and Spoken Word

Taught by:

Talia Eapen 

As actors, comedians, writers, directors, we can be asked by industry, fans etc... “so, what’s your story?”  

 

Long winded explanation and streams of consciousness can confuse or disinterest casting agents, reporters and interviewers. This class will help express yourself while keeping your narrative brief and meaningful.  

 

This 5 week class will focus on editing your personal narrative for the stage and for written statements and bios. Hosting, public speaking, active listening and help you build critical thinking when you are in front of a live audience.  

 

In each class everyone will give a 1-5-minute presentation on the subject assigned. Comedy students will also have a chance to present at our stand-up fundraiser in February 2018.

EPIC Lifestyles:

Career and Life Skills Workshops for the Actor

Taught by

Aubrie Therrien, Annette Nielson and Lauren Callan

Taking care of your self, making sure you have a professional resume and headshot, learning how to write great emails, understanding social media ettiquite, fitness and nutrition concepts - these are all things fundamental to self-care as a performer and advocacy for ones career. Through a series of yearly workshops, classes and experiences, EPIC company members can continue to improve their understanding of their self needs and their professional brand.

*Class will culminate/Follow-up with one workout class at an exercise studio (fee may apply) and one grocery store tour and cooking class (fee may apply)*

Tuesday/Thursday 11/29 - Social Media and Email Etiquitte, 6:30 - 8:30, South Oxford Space

*Learn how to write a great email and do's and don'ts of social media

EPIC Special Intensive:

Networking with a Big Shot

*Class is by  APPLICATION ONLY. Application will open in November. Learn how to Network and prepare to have lunch with a big shot to take about your career and make connections*

In this invitation only class, actors will get a chance to "practice their pitch" when meeting with industry professionals. Students will meet for two intensive sessions on the art of conversation, networking, preparedness and pitch. The class will culminate with a lunch with an industry "big shot" to test out newly learned skills and make connections.

Class will be offered twice per year.
